So, there's 9 judges in a room...(math problem)
They all shake hands with each other once. How many pairs of hands were shaken?
This is a question I need to figure out before next Tuesday. Now, me being extremely lazy, doesn't wanna work it all out on paper. But I have thought about it and I think the answer is 44 pairs of hands.
Because 9 + 8 + 7 etc is 44. Reasoning behind that is each time one shakes the others hand, their options decrease by one. Then when you're left with one person, he's already shaken everyone elses hands, so you don't count him.
Can anyone verify this for me?

Me thinks 72.
If there's 9 judges, they're all going to shake hands with all the others. So you've got 9 judges shaking hands with 8 other people, 9 x 8 = 72
Unless I'm just a dumbass.
Unless then you're going to count the pairs only once, in which case it'd be...something else.
Ok now me thinks 36.
That's me little sketch, basically you just do lines from one judge to everyone, count the number of lines, write it down, then cross him out, then draw lines from another judge to all other judges except the one crossed out, write down the number of lines, then cross him out, repeat the process.
You end up with 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Add them together and ye get 36 me thinks 'eh?
I think that's it. Unless I'm just a dumbass.
Yeah, me thinks it's 36. Counted the lines while removing and continuing without repeating.

I don't take it to seriously, I saw a problem and wanted to try and solve it. Even though I hate math, I respect it almost as a form of art.
I'll PM ye about the guild.

So the answer is 8+7+6+5+4+3+2+1 = 36

i came up with the same answer. after all, you cant shake your own hand (well you could but thats kinda ......odd)

If you want a formula for it it goes something like this;
(n(n-1))/2
So
(9(8))/2 = 36

The answer is zero, you don't shake a pair of hands, you only shake one of the person's hands.

The question isn't how many pairs of hands you shook, it's how many pairs of hands were shaken, period.

I think you worded the question wrong or something.
If they only use their right hands to shake hands, then only 9 hands were used no matter how many times they shook hands with it, thats the maximum number of hands they used. You ask how many PAIRS, well a pair is 2 so then you could say 4 and 1/2 pairs. If you mean each person's pair of hands (right and left) you could say 0, unless they used their left hands... in which case it'd be 9 pairs.
Are you sure it doesn't ask how many times were hands shaken in total? Phraseology could (gored engine) a solution up. The answer they MAY be looking for is 35.
Double check your question.

Well each judge can only shake the other judges hand once, then he moves onto the next one.
So they're all shaking hands with one another but can't shack the same judges hand twice.
And a pair of hands is just the two judges hands who clasped.

Well it's a night college class and the teacher said that this would be on the test.
Now, it's a government test, so why we have math on it, I don't know. But that's where the judge part comes in.
